Petticoats & Tutus

Although there are a few costume instances of tutus that I can recall from the '80s, but mostly what we wore (like Cyndi Lauper) are petticoats. A tutu is worn by ballerinas; they stick nearly straight out (or sag slightly) but are not intended to support any other garment on top. Petticoats are undergarments that provide fullness to an outer garment. They can be plain, layered, or gathered. The can be long or short. Square dancers wear petticoats.

Unless you're replicating the Go-Gos "Vacation" video, or Nikki from "Who's That Girl", you'll probably want to complete your '80s look with a petticoat like Cyndi Lauper or Whitney Houston.

Whitney Houston: Petticoat

Madonna: Tutu

Cyndi Lauper: Petticoats
