Units, Multiples, and Ultra Brights - Oh My!

If you're a Gen X woman chances are you owned something by fashion designer Sandra Garratt in the '80s. Her UNITS brand (launched in 1979) and Multiples line (launched 1989) were wildly successful - and inspired many knock-offs.

Units grew in popularity throughout the '80s - this ad was probably from the late '80s.

Au Coton (launched in 1982) made their mark with their oversized pastel line and iconic logo.

After her legal woes with UNITS, Sandra Garratt launched a second line called Multiples that sold in high end department stores and targeted a more sophisticated audience.

Cabin Sales & Roommates

Looking to get on board the sold out 2024 '80s Cruise, or maybe find a roommate? There's a Facebook group for that: The 80s Cruise Cabin (re)sales & Roommates

ECP does not recognize private sales; all transactions must go directly through ECP. If someone needs to sell their cabin (and it isn't covered by insurance) they can simply call ECP and tell them to note their account that they are looking to sell. ECP will NOT help you sell your cabin; you will need to find a buyer. Once you've found someone interested in your cabin they can call ECP and give them your cabin info. They will see the account note and proceed with the transaction. You will receive a refund and they will pay the current cabin price that applies to them. Your discounts, dining time, and any seat reservations are not transferred with the cabin sale.

If a seller is interested in offering a discount (say, $1000 off) then ECP will withhold that amount from their refund and apply it to the buyer's price. There is a $500.00 transaction fee and the deadline is one week before sailing.

Your '80s Pants Primer

Parachute Pants - originally known as flight pants, are a style of trousers characterized by the use of nylon, especially ripstop nylon. In the original tight-fitting style of the early 1980s, "parachute" referred to the pants' nylon material, similar to a parachute's. Parachute pants became a fad in US culture in the 1980s as part of the increased popularity of breakdancing.

Parachute Pants

Hammer / Harem pants - baggy, low crotch pants. Like, really low. Practically the opposite of parachute pants. Technically Hammer pants are a version of Harem pants - baggy pants drawn in at the ankles.

Hammer Pants

Elephant Pants - Bohemian style of Harem pants that often featured Thai prints, sometimes including elephants. Legs could be tapered or palazzo style. Typically one-size fits all. They were around in the '80s, but I wouldn't say that was their peak. Mostly I'm just including them for comparison.

Zubaz/Skater Pants - These had a lot of names. Jammers, Gym pants, Beach pants,  Muscle pants, Zubaz, etc. Some even call them Harem pants. These were bright cotton print pants that were easy to move in, typically with an elastic (or otherwise adjustable) waist and often a large, prominent label. These were very late '80s and in some cases more of an early '90s fad. See also: Zubaz, Billabong, Limpies, Jams, Gecko Hawaii.

Note: This ad is from the early '90s

Chinos - put simply, these were khakis. Made from 100% cotton twill in China, the trousers were known in Spanish as pantalones chinos (Chinese pants), which became shortened to simply "chinos" in English (source: Wikipedia)

New Theme Announced For 2024

ECP sent out an e-mail today announcing the 4th theme night: Kickback & Glow (you can view the email online here).

Looks like a very similar take on the Neon Beach Party themes from 2016-2018, and Neon Mardi Gras in 2019.  We haven't had an official neon theme in 5 years!

Neon fashion first appeared when Stephen Sprouse revived '60s day-glo fashion on the runway in 1983. Most of what trickled down to the shopping malls was fluorescent accessories and swimwear. I mean, what's the point of UV clothes if you don't have a UV light shining on you? Neon became popular again at the end of the '80s and moved into the early '90s with a lot of Hip Hop fashion.

Amazon lets you search the entire category of UV clothes and cosmetics.  Tonic water is also fluorescent.

Pop Icon theme 2024

Pop Icon is the BIGGEST costume night on the '80s Cruise - and the costume contest!  You better bring your A-game for this.  For more details you can view the original email online here.

2024 Theme: Punks vs Preps

Punks vs Preps + Pub Crawl. Hope it doesn't get too rowdy, but I might need my cricket mallet just in case...

2024 Cruise

Here's what we know so far! The '80s Cruise will be embarking on Thursday, February 29th (Ooo, a leap year!) from Port Canaveral and return Thursday, March 7th. The Mariner of the Seas will be stopping at  Aruba and Caracao. This is the same ship from the 2022 Cruise.

As before, the artists won't be announced until the first night on board the 2023 Cruise, but booking will open earlier for returning cruisers (who will receive a token from ECP) - and likely have a penalty-free cancellation period.

Costume Spotlight: Marilyn Vance

I thought this might be relevant to share because (1) Marilyn costumes a LOT of iconic '80s films, and (2) because I'm working on reproducing one of them for this year's cruise!

She has over 60 film credits for Costume Design, but the highlights are:
  • Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
  • Romancing the Stone (1984)
  • Streets of Fire (1984)
  • The Breakfast Club (1985)
  • Weird Science (1985)
  • Pretty in Pink (1986)
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
  • Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
  • Predator (1987)
  • Die Hard (1988)
  • Road House (1989)
  • Pretty Woman (1990)
She has her own website (MarilynVance.com) and she's still active as a designer and film producer.

Unofficial Events

As folks begin to receive their cruise info packets in the mail this month I wanted to organized all the UNOFFICIAL events for fellow cruisers. Most of these have events in the Facebook Group's event section.
