Door Decorations!

You won't want to miss this tradition of decorating your door - '80s style!!  You may even get some extra notoriety from the celebrities on board!  The doors and walls are magnetic so you don't even need tape.

Alumni (OC) Chuck C. also has several photo albums full of door decor: 2018 Doors 2019 Doors

2018 Random Swag

In addition to the swag you'll receive from ECP every evening, you'll have plenty of opportunities to collect other memorabilia such as guitar picks and set lists from the concerts, bracelets from your new friends, prizes from Trivia, and if you're lucky a rockin' duck from the Ducks!

TV dinners

In addition the regular evening menu, there will be a TV dinner option on the menu. Here was mine from the first year (2016).

2016 Swag

Every evening after dinner your cabin steward will leave some swag in your room. These are some (not quite all) of the swag I received on the 2016 cruise.  Every year has been a little different.

* Missing from this picture is the back-up phone charger.

Theatre Seating for 2019

Some returning guests were offered reserved seating in the main venue when they made their reservations. On the 2018 cruise reserved seats that were not occupied by the start of the show were made available to open seating (via an announcement by the emcee). The reserved seating does not apply to shows or events in any other venue on the ship. If you have experienced any difficulty with your seats you are encouraged to contact ECP directly (there is nothing I can do for you, this blog post is for informational purposes only).

Maripol

The UK had Vivian Westwood and NYC had Maripol. Originally from France, Maripol moved to NYC in 1976 where she worked in the fashion industry.  Influential in New York’s underground scene in the '80s her Polaroid collection features  icons such as Keith Haring, Bianca Jagger, and Grace Jones; "People aren't threatened by a Polaroid. For me it became an obsessional object. I used to take photos of everything––a piece of jewelry I made, if I was on holiday, or if I saw a beautiful Manhattan building." Maripol is best known for styling Madonna's first two albums in the mid-80s. Maripol's black rubber bracelets and crucifixes became as iconic as Madonna herself. Forever 21 has recently featured some summer designs with her Polaroids.

2019 Seniors

"Private School" (1983)
There has been some concern over who will be allowed to participate in the ECP Senior Graduation on the 2019 '80s Cruise.  Steve Spears (from Stuck In The '80s) took the initiative to speak with ECP's Joey Fairchild today (July 18, 2018) and he promised "every senior will walk at graduation."

Rugby Shirts, 80's Style

Although the "Polo" golf shirt was probably the most iconic men's shirt of the 80's (Izod, Lacoste, etc), the Rugby shirt became trendy in the mid-80's featuring pop culture logos square in the middle of the chest - Coca Cola being the most popular, but many brands soon followed. The rugby style continued into the 90's.  Which color did you have?

Artist Line-Ups (as of July, 2018)

We've had amazing line-ups every year, but maybe you're wondering how they compare?  Well, I did some research. As before, if you see any mistakes please (kindly) let me know (preferably with a link to the correct info).

2017's cruise had 12 artists, so it's conceivable 2019 may get another (it has 11 now), but there's just no way of knowing. 2016 had 10 artists, and 2018 had 11. Obviously this does not include comedians and actors. Was thinking of adding another column for the Canadian charts? But since none of these are Canadian artists (I don't think?), I wouldn't expect a huge uptick anywhere.

However, the list of top 40 hits is by no means the only metric of comparison. Grandmaster Flash performed with the Furious 5 and had a #62 Hot 100 hit, and on the R&B charts they charted 8 times. They were inducted into the hall of fame in 2007 and won a Grammy in 2011. Grandmaster Flash had 4 solo singles on the Billboard R&B charts, and was also an innovative DJ (re: scratching, punch-phrasing, and backspin technique). So Billboard Top 40 / Hot 100 is just one way of comparing artists... but in THIS case, doesn't show the bigger picture.

Stephen Sprouse

Sprouse (center) with Teri Toye (left)
Stephen Sprouse is credited for bringing street culture to high fashion, and of course bringing 60's day-glo back in his neon collections. His 1983 collections were sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel in New York City on a small scale. His 1984 Fall runway show at the Ritz (now Webster Hall),  packed the house with the most glamorous downtown personalities of the time, including Andy Warhol and Debbie Harry. Transgender model Teri Toye led the show, which ended with a video of a NASA shuttle launching into space. He then declared bankruptcy in June 1985.
In 2001, fellow punk-influenced designer Marc Jacobs collaborated with Sprouse on graffiti-print bags for Louis Vuitton.  Sprouse passed away in 2004 from lung cancer.

The Stephen Sprouse Book, by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha, was released on January 13, 2009.

You can still find some of his vintage 80's pieces on eBay, but look carefully because much of it is from his later 2001 line.
